Question
I have done my graduation in b.tech in electronics and instrumentation engineering from UPTU affiliated college in 2014. Since 2014 I have been given GATE exam every year but the result seems not too good to get admission in any IITs or get a call from any PSUs. This year I have also given GATE exam and waiting for the result. in the mean time I have also applied for Bank exams but seems no result. now I got frustrated I have no idea what to do. Whether to go for M.tech or MBA or PSUs. As 3 years have been gone so none of private companies is interested in my profile. Please help me in my career guidance. I am really in need. I also want to go abroad for short term courses but the fees is too high and can’t afford.
Answer
Hi Shilpi,
First of all, CHILL.
Three Years gap is not a big deal. Moreover, you worked hard and tried your best. So, you shouldn’t have any regret of about three years gap. You gained an experience and knowledge that will help you forever. Do remember that this is a testing time that turn children into Adults. It will pass soon.
So you should be happy about the efforts you made and knowledge you have gained over the years.
What next?
I believe that a few years of gap on resume might have lowered your confidence level. Maybe if you will work for sometime, you will learn new things, meet new people, and may regain your confidence. Thus, you should look for a job.
Now, what kind of job and which company will give you job?
Many companies will give you job. You simply need to the following:
- Decide the field that you want to join
- Join a short term course, preferable online courses. For IT related sites, you can join sites like Udemy, Lynda, GogoTraining, etc.
- Complete the course and do an internship. Don’t expect much compensation from the Internship.
- Look for a job while doing internship.
- Join Startups and SMEs
Smart Hack – Many small companies may give you training that includes experience certificates. You can try them as well.
What will happen to your dream like MBA, PSUs, etc.
You can prepare for them while working. You can join an online course and prepare for whichever competitive exam you wish while sitting at home. It saves a lot of time and money.

Of being into recruitment industry made me a good communicator and speaker now I can interact with any type of person with different set of minds psychologies. Please suggest me any of the related IT Skills which is in demand that can make shape my career. I shall be highly obliged to you.
Hi Rakesh,
.NET was not a great choice in the first place. However, let’s forget the past. Learn Python and Data Science while in the job. And you will get a high salary job.
We wish you all the best.

I completed my diploma in mechanical in 2018 and after i worked as a diploma trainee for 19 months and then I worked in my family business after 3 years of gap now in 2021 I’m going to join B.E will these 3 years of gap will it affect me for getting placement in top companies
Hi Balaji, focus on the skills and learn the latest technologies while in the campus. Some companies may have an issue with three years of gap, however, most of them will hire you based on your skills and communication skills. Rarely, companies reject candidate solely on the basis on gap years. We wish you all the best!

Hi !.
I graduated in 2017 with a degree in electrical and have unemployed since then. Like the person above, I wrote GATE 3 times and did not qualify in any of those. I applied for my masters in US for Fall 2021 but I’m having second thoughts regarding my decision. Is a four year gap a bit much for Masters especially since I haven’t opened my electrical books for the past one year?. Should i pursue an MBA?. I tried applying for jobs but none worked.
Hi,
The gap is not a big deal. Start afresh and do whatever you want to do.
In all interviews, you need to answer the reasons for the gap. You can be honest and state the facts.
If other things are okay, the gap year will never be the sole reason for rejection.
Don’t compare yourself as it doesn’t help.
Decide one thing and go ahead with it.
It is time to start a new life and give whatever you can.
Sometimes I thought I waste my 5 years after 12th in 2016 and doing diploma 2019 I haven’t any source of income, family situation are also not good.
Sometimes things what can I do for a better life me as well of family. But again I didn’t get any solution. I think I haven’t any graduation degree. Sometimes do graduation but job is first + age matter . Bcz now I am 24 year old. I haven’t any idea about life .
But again relax and find atleast I am alive. Atleast I am purely healthy no any major disease. Family are live together. Have a home . But again mind said no you are soo behind your colleagues your classmates they are at any of fine position.
Plz anyone suggest what I do .. can i go graduation in btech leet . or other degree
Hi Parvez, stop comparing yourself with others. Everyone has their own luck and timezone. Everyone should move their convenient speed. You may go for graduation in the field you like.
However, I strongly recommend that you do a job (part-time of full-time) as well so that you will stay connected with the real world requirements.
I did graduation in Btech from KIIT University in the year 2016 in Electronics and electrical engineering . I even got placed in an IT company but I left after working for only 5 months because I wanted to do a government job. Since then I have been giving bank exams from 2017 but I am missing narrowly, this year also I am waiting for results but I don’t think I will succeed. Now my age is 27 and no private company will accept such a gap. What should I do?Please help me out.
Hi Sabyasachi,
All the best for your results.
Today, the work environment is different from it was three years ago.
Complete a course in your preferred programming language (Codecademy is best for self-learning). Do an internship or work on a live project and start applying for a job. While doing internship, you may also arrange an experience certificate.
You may start with a startup or a small organization. However, in a year or two you can change and grow in that field.
Nothing is lost as of now. And you can reset your career at this point without any hesitation (I know people who started programming at an age of 36 and they succeeded, so you are quite younger).
We wish you all the best once again.
I have completed my btech in year 2019 from electronics and communication branch and went on to prepare for government competitive exams. Because of covid no such exams happened and it keeps on getting postponed even in 2021. No fixed date announce for state exam. I have started taking couple of programming courses. Is it to late for me, In the month of june it will be almost 2 years of gap after my graduation. What should i do. How should i apply and what should be my strategy from now onwards.
Hi Siddhant,
You have a valid reason for the gap and it will not impact your candidature in anyway. So, you shouldn’t worry about the gap.
Next, learn one programming language (or become a full-stack developer) and become a master of the same.
Work on a few live projects or do internship.
You will surely do well in the future.
We wish you all the best.
I am 27 and have an academic gap of 3 years. I completed my B.Tech in 2017. Currently, I am pursuing M.Tech from a tier 3 college which doesn’t provide placement. I have forgotten all the technical stuff that I learnt in B.tech. Is it possible for me to get a job in the IT sector after completing my M.Tech in 2021? What should I do to get a job?

I have completed my B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering in the year of 2014. After trying for competitive exams, I have started career as a Lecturer. Due to present situations in teaching field, I am not able to continue it as B.Tech is no more sufficient for teaching. So I am planning to move to the software field. I have knowledge on Python and ServiceNow modules. Now I am learning AI&ML. But as teaching experience is not considered in software, I am not getting any opportunities. I can learn anything with basic training but not getting any chance. Can you suggest anything about what should I do now?
